History
Jagannath University was initially founded as “Dhaka Brahma School” in 1858 by Dinanath Sen, a prominent Brahmo leader. The school was later transformed into “Jagannath College” in 1884 when Jagannath Roy Chowdhury, a wealthy local landlord, donated funds for its development. The college became a government institution in 1968. It played a vital role in the education sector of East Pakistan, which is now Bangladesh.
In 2005, the institution was upgraded to a full-fledged public university, aiming to provide higher education opportunities to a growing number of students.
Campus and Location
The university is located in the heart of Dhaka, near the Buriganga River, in the southern part of the old city. Its central location makes it easily accessible but also means that space is limited compared to other universities. The campus houses multiple academic and administrative buildings, libraries, and student facilities.
Academic Structure
Jagannath University offers a wide range of undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate programs. It is organized into several faculties and institutes, including:
- Faculty of Science
- Faculty of Arts
- Faculty of Business Studies
- Faculty of Social Science
- Faculty of Law
- Faculty of Life and Earth Sciences
- Faculty of Fine Arts
The university is known for its strong academic programs in business, law, social sciences, and natural sciences. Research activities are also encouraged across disciplines, contributing to the development of new knowledge and innovation.
Student Life
Jagannath University has a diverse student body, with students coming from all over Bangladesh. The university holds various cultural and social events throughout the year, including student clubs, debates, and sports activities. The annual “JnU Fest” is a popular event that showcases the talents of students in music, arts, and literature.
However, the university faces challenges with student accommodation as it does not currently provide residential facilities for a large number of students, many of whom need to find private housing in the surrounding areas.
Challenges and Development
JnU faces several challenges, including space constraints due to its urban location, limited campus facilities, and the absence of dormitories for students. However, efforts are ongoing to expand the university’s infrastructure and improve its academic and administrative systems.
Despite these challenges, Jagannath University remains a key institution in Bangladesh’s higher education landscape. Its commitment to academic excellence, research, and community engagement continues to make it an important educational hub for the region.
